As a life-long athlete, and a sometimes-duffer, my affiliation with the Titleist Performance Institute has been really valuable. The volume of information there is almost overwhelming. I regularly check out their Golf Fitness and Golf Health section. And look at this — there’s even an iPhone app for your golf swing:

The last thing we need is another gadget to put in our car, golf bag or pocket.

This is the reason to love the recent explosion of apps for our mobile devices.

If you’re wondering, “what is an app?”, I might assume you’re still using lead tape on your driver to get the proper weight or that you’re watching Rambo on a beta video tape.

An app is a software utility that makes performing a simple and specific task possible. In this case, possible on a mobile device.

V1 had one goal in mind: make their swing analysis tool completely integrated and highly functional on a mobile platform.

V1 has achieved that goal and then some.

The V1 Golf app, which I’m currently running on my iPhone 3GS is robust and swift. It films swings at the highest possible frame and shutter the phone’s hardware can handle – 30fps and around 1/1000 with best possible lighting. These frame rate shutter speed settings are bound by the iPhone’s native hardware, so you cannot manually adjust to fit your lighting conditions. In other words, this is a phone first, camera second, so leave high speed footage to the more beefy Casio’s and the like.

Now, I never would have thought of something like that with the help of TPI. If you’re a golfer, TPI is awesome, and you don’t have to be Phil Mickelson to benefit from it (my dad, a hacker of the first order, says he can’t get enough of it.)

With the stresses that golf puts on the body, the connection to chiropractic is a natural. I’m looking forward to bringing you more information from TPI in the future. Please check back regularly for my golf updates, and don’t be afraid to leave a comment or start a discussion. Patient input is always welcome!

At one time or another, we have all experienced the discomfort of bloating, abdominal pain, gas, diarrhea or constipation. But, for many, this is becoming a daily occurrence. Traditionally, triggers have been thought to be anything from stress, eating certain foods, or stomach or bowel infections.

Crohn’s Disease is an inflammatory bowel disease, and its prevalence is increasing in industrialized nations. The symptoms are most commonly diarrhea and stomach pain, but weight loss and irritability are also characteristic of the disease. Up until now, typical treatment has been to administer various drugs such as antihistamines, antibiotics, immunosuppressants and artificial hormones. Unfortunately for many, these drugs are considered unsatisfactory. Many sufferers often require recurring hospitalization and even surgery.

According to the results of a recent study on “Chronic Nerve Compression,” Vertebral Subluxation may play a significant role in the cause of Crohn’s Disease and other digestive problems.

The nerve compression that results from chronic, undetected subluxation can have significant effects on digestion and the absorption of nutrients and liquids. The authors of the study noted that they were able to obtain significant alleviation and remission of the diseases by reducing the amount of nerve interference caused by subluxation.

A massive 70% of the patients who had battled with chronic digestive problems showed long-term and stable remission of their symptoms without the need for drugs after receiving 12 – 52 weeks of specific corrective chiropractic adjustments.

“It is easy to see why people with all kinds of digestive and intestinal disorders respond very well to specific corrective adjustments. All human processes are monitored and controlled by the human brain, spinal cord and the network of nerves exiting the spine that run through the whole body,” the researchers said.

Our Health problem of the month for June is “Chronic Digestive Problems.” As such, we are focusing on digestive problems and their relationship to an abnormal spine and stressed nervous system.

“Chiropractic Cures Infant with Constipation”
Chiropractic Pediatrics, Vol. 1 No. 3 Dec. 1994

An infant began having constipation at six months old when solid foods were introduced. In order for her to have a bowel movement, she had to be in a warm bath with her legs up and her abdomen massaged. At one point, the baby actually became impacted and emergency care was needed. It was not uncommon for her to go a week to ten days between bowel movements. After her second chiropractic adjustment, the patient had a bowel movement all by herself. Within two weeks, she began having regular bowel movements by herself every two or three days. At 16 months, the patient began to walk and she has at least one totally normal bowel movement every day.

“25-Year-Old Woman with Irritable Bowel Syndrome Saved By Chiropractic”
Chiropractic Technique 1996

Irritable Bowel Syndrome, also known as ‘mucous colitis’ and nervous bowel, affects 15-25% of adults. Symptoms include cramping and/or abdominal pain, diarrhea or constipation, ulcer-type symptoms, heartburn and/or upper abdominal indigestion.

In this case study of a woman with chronic irritable bowel syndrome, her chief complaint was intestinal pain and diarrhea. This was worse during stressful periods and had occurred one or two times per week for the past five years. After her first chiropractic adjustment, she reported that she had not experienced any diarrhea for two days following. Her symptoms were quickly alleviated during the course of her intensive corrective care. Two years later, she remained symptom-free with regular wellness adjustments.

Consider this: your stomach, gall bladder, spleen, kidneys, liver, large and small intestines, appendix and rectal passage cannot work at 100% if they are receiving compromised nerve impulses. That’s why regular checkups of your spine are essential for maintaining great digestive health…not just until the bloating goes away, but for life (that is, if you want your digestive system working for life!)

If you know someone who has battled with a bloated stomach, constipation, diarrhea, reflux or stomach acid problems, they have one more week to take advantage of the opportunity to receive a 50% Off checkup in our office!

Of all the things that can be a source of inspiration and a renewed passion for achieving health, of all the things that can act as a catalyst to dramatically change the way you take care of your family, few things come close to a moving, honest testimonial expressed by someone just like you.

Testimonials from people who have battled with long-term health problems, abnormalities, sickness and disease often help explain what is possible, what can happen, and what should happen in a body that is strong and well aligned with a nervous system that is switched on for life. They provide us with a great source of joy, empathy, understanding and sometimes horror when hearing of what they have gone through.

Here are just a few of the testimonials that we have received recently regarding Chronic Digestive Problems:

“I heard about your practice at my local gym. I bless the day it happened. Previously, I have tried two other chiropractors, one of whom did more damage than repair. Years of acupuncture certainly eased my pain, but at times I had to keep going back twice a week to keep it under control. Regular massage was also part of my life at that time. Exercising at the gym was often painful, especially in my lower back region. I regularly got bursitis in my right hip and down my right leg. I couldn’t turn my neck. My digestive system was shot. Vacuuming and other household activities were also difficult to do at times.

I have been a patient in your practice for over a year and have learned much more about my spine and nervous system and how they work. My body took years to get in the condition it was in, and I don’t expect it to get better overnight. However, what I focus on is making all of my adjustments and doing my traction and exercises; I am experiencing the results. My digestive system is much better since starting my chiropractic care here…” – A.S.

“Previously, I had used a chinese medicinal doctor, an herbalist, had blood/saliva/stool tests, seen a psychologist, everything and anything to find the cause of fatigue and digestive problems. My problems were interfering with my life on some level every single day. My checkup identified my terrible spinal condition and I learned of the correlation between my nerve system and my poor spine (and therefore my health). I have received excellent knowledge and awareness of chiropractic care and it has revealed the root cause of my problems. I strongly recommend that everyone gets their spine checked and become aware of its foundational importance for life. I am gradually getting better.” – S.O.

“Chiropractic care gives me comfort knowing that my health is operating at its maximum level and knowing that, if I do have an illness, my recovery time is much quicker. Prior to starting, I could not turn my head. This made driving my little kids dangerous because I could properly check my blind spots (at the time, I thought it was no big deal!). I had frequent low back pain and daily indigestion. Corrective chiropractic has helped me immensely – stick with it.” – D.J.

“Medication I took for low back pain resulted in me having stomach ulcers. Since being under chiropractic care, I’ve stopped all medication, and most of my problems are gone, except for when I miss an adjustment due to my work schedule or when too much physical exertion during the weekend causes more subluxation. I have been under care here for over 6 years now (in fact, my whole family has), and we will continue to get adjusted for the rest of our lives.” – M.E.

“I had no motivation and was always taking medication. I was tired a lot. I had no knowledge of how to take care of my body. I was bloated. I had tonsillitis every couple of months. I was on lots of antibiotics and was on thyroxine because my thyroid stopped working and I got glandular fever. I have since learned that there are better ways to prevent your body from suffering and that it is better to attack the cause than the symptoms. Chiropractic is life. It’s part of my life and my future life. I feel great!” – S.V.

Many patients have indicated that newsletters help them better explain to their friends and co-workers why they will get adjusted for life, and why their friends should have their spine and nerve system checked for nerve interference. We hope this one you do the same!

Many people that come into a chiropractic office are there because they are in pain. This accounts for over 70% of new patient visits to a chiropractic office. Less than 30% of the visits to a chiropractic office are for the simple fact that a person is concerned about their health, well being and their longevity.

Why have you chosen chiropractic? Many people look at chiropractic as a structural problem; their spine is out of alignment, causing muscle spasm, pain, stiffness or some other symptom. An evaluation was performed, X-rays were taken, the individual was shown their X-rays and they saw that their spine was really “crooked.” At one point, someone will sit and look at their x-rays and determine in their own mind how bad their spine is. Many patients will say, “Wow, my spine looks really bad, maybe I’d better do chiropractic.” Others will look at their spine on the X-ray and say, “That’s not so bad, maybe I won’t do chiropractic right now. I’ll think about it.” This is a very dangerous and precarious trap to get into as a patient. Please do not evaluate whether you and your family should use chiropractic because of structure alone.

For a human being to look at chiropractic properly, they must make the decision to use chiropractic based on one thing: It is something they should have been doing for life since birth. Not for the fact of keeping their spine healthy, but for the purpose and principle of keeping their nerve system free of subluxation (interference) for life. Every human function – physical, emotional and mental – must occur from the brain. The brain is there to send the life force of healing through the spinal cord to allow every function that goes on in your life to occur. These include perception of hot or cold, whether you see today as a beautiful day or not, and whether your heart, lungs, liver, kidneys and all your other organs are functioning at 100%. The reason you choose chiropractic should be to allow 100% expression of LIFE through your nervous system 100% of the time for your complete physical, emotional and mental ability to have proper health and healing. Many human beings in the community do not understand this concept. It’s up to us to share it with them. The following amazing testimonials and case studies will help:

“Man with Crohn’s Disease cured by Chiropractic”
Today’s Chiropractic – 1995

This case involves a 31-year-old man with Crohn’s disease (since age 15). A portion of his intestine had been removed and he was on antibiotics and prednisone. He had not had a normal bowel movement since age 15 and constantly suffered from abdominal cramps.
Chiropractic analysis: Subluxation of C2.
By the 13th visit, he started having normal bowel movements and all medication was stopped.

“Adjustments help in the treatment of Stomach Ulcer”

Sixteen adult men and women from 16-47 years of age with endoscopically confirmed diagnosis of ulcer disease were in the experimental group that received chiropractic care. Forty were in the control group that received traditional medical treatment. They were studied using endoscopy and clinical examination. The chiropractic group had pain relief and healing of the ulcer after 1-9 (average 3.8) days while the control group (medical) took ten days longer. Most frequently involved segments were T9-T12.

“Gallbladder Disease caused by Spinal Decay”
Journal of the American Osteopathic Association 1968

Using radiography, 61 hospital patients were examined. It was found that in 88% of patients with gall bladder disease, there was spinal decay from T7-T10. Spinal decay at T9-T11 was found in 82% of those with stomach disease. Many sufferers of pancreatic disease had segments T5-T7 involved and 31% of patients with duodenal disease had bone spurs at vertebrae T9-L2.

So many of our patients frequently comment that they have friends battling “this,” a family member who has “that,” or co-workers who are always calling in sick with some ailment or illness. Our patients frequently state that chiropractic could help them. However, those words are sometimes not listened to or acted upon. So, our team developed a fantastic community health program to make it SOOOO easy for them and SOOOO easy for you!

Your Voice Can Heal

Ever listen to people’s conversations on the street or in restaurants? So much of it is about the drugs they are taking. So much of it is about diseases that don’t go away or suffering that will not end. A few words from you might change their lives.

Who Told You About Chiropractic?

What would your health be like if your spine was never adjusted? If someone never told you about chiropractic? Would you be living on drugs? Facing surgery? Fortunately, someone did tell you about chiropractic, and you were introduced to the world of natural health care and subluxation correction. In doing so, you’ve joined the many millions of people who have found relief from dis-ease and regained their health under safe, natural, drug-free chiropractic care.

Why Live On Drugs?

When chiropractic enthusiasts see others – friends, relatives, perhaps even strangers – living on pills and other medicines, they ask, “Why live on drugs? Why live in pain? Aren’t you frustrated with not getting better? Aren’t you tired of being sick and tired? Why don’t you see my chiropractor?”

Van Family Chiropractic Commitment

Our team is committed to improving the education, health and future of our community. Each month, we will feature a specific health concern and will provide an accurate and researched article for you to pass along to someone you know. These articles will address the causes of the problems and will explain the chiropractic connection and the validity and benefits of chiropractic care.

This Month’s Theme

Do you have friends, family members or co-workers who suffer from chronic digestive problems? Then tell them, “You’re not alone!” Millions of people suffer from a myriad of different digestive problems, including bloating, heartburn, gas, diarrhea, constipation or even Crohn’s Disease. Unfortunately, most of these people rely on frequent use of medication to counteract the pain and discomfort of these symptoms. However, the medication simply masks the symptoms rather than actually curing the cause of the digestive issue itself. Thankfully, the vast majority of our patients have found that these digestive issues can be minimized or even eliminated through safe, natural chiropractic care!

A Gentle, Accurate and Efficient Checkup

A thorough examination can determine if the allergies or sinus problems your friends or family members are experiencing are a result of misalignments in their spine. The tests performed during this examination are gentle, accurate and efficient. Our highly trained and experienced team will then provide your friend with a thorough report to explain what has been found in their child’s case. As always, when you refer a friend, the initial checkup will be 50% off! Help your friends make 2010 healthier and better than 2009. They really have nothing to lose!

Do you know others who battle with headaches, migraines and/or neck pain? The head and neck are the most vulnerable parts of the body, especially the spine inside your neck. Not only does the neck support the head (which weighs approximately 10-15 pounds), but it also allows forward, backward, lateral and rotational movement of your head. In addition, it must transmit the flow of nerve impulses through your spinal cord to your head, face, hands and the rest of your body. Besides discomfort and annoyance, chronic neck pain and headaches are a sign that something is wrong.

Many everyday things can cause neck pain and headaches, such as watching TV, using your computer, reading a book or falling asleep in a chair or on an airplane. The temporary pain that results can resolve on its own, especially when the offending activity is discontinued. However, this doesn’t mean the problem is gone….You may be carrying around a more serious condition.

Bad posture is a lifetime scenario for most people. If your head weighs 10 pounds (which is the typical load) and is in alignment directly above your shoulder, the effective load on your spinal tissues is just 10 pounds. However, if your head has moved forward, the load is increased by a factor of ten with each additional inch of forward posture. SO, if you are carrying your head 2 inches forward of where it should be, your head is loading 30 pounds to the supporting tissues. If you are carrying it 3 inches forward of where it should be, then 40 pounds of pressure is being stressed through your neck and shoulders. As a result, your health and performance can decrease while the neck pain, headaches and fatigue that often come with living with these problems increase!

In fact, when your head is carried forward for many years, there is a greater incidence of developing arthritis in the spine. Bad posture also affects the soft tissues and can change the blood flow to the spinal cord itself. Forward posture has also been associated with disc damage. Sustained poor posture robs the muscles of oxygen and causes tissue damage. Tendons, ligaments and discs undergo changes that can become permanent. This is probably why many individuals who have bad posture cannot correct it by themselves!

Daily poor posture could be costing you thousands! A recent study has revealed that those who suffer from chronic back pain for one year may experience a reduction in the brain’s grey matter equivalent to the average person going through 10 to 20 years of normal aging. It’s no surprise that research has found that posture affects and moderates every physiological function, from breathing to hormonal production. Spinal pain, headache, mood, blood pressure, pulse and lung capacity are among the functions most easily influenced by posture.

The most common cause of neck pain is functional distortions in the spine resulting from vertebral subluxations. These subluxations are seen in cases of reverse cervical curve, whiplash and joint instability. The body responds by tightening muscles in the neck, “splinting” the joint to protect it from further insult. Chiropractic care can help.

Most of the pain-sensing nerves in the neck are located in the pairs of facet joints on the back side of each vertebra. These smooth, interlocking surfaces allow you to rotate your head and bend your head up and down. If these joints become locked or fixated, neck pain can result. Chiropractic care can help restore proper joint motion.

A more difficult problem to correct is the degenerative changes that result from neglect. Years of uncorrected spinal problems can cause bone spurs, disc thinning and other forms of spinal decay. These types of problems respond more slowly, and some type of ongoing supportive chiropractic care may be necessary.

Our response to stress is another common cause of neck pain. Deadlines. Rush-hour traffic. Over-committing ourselves. Work pressures. Family obligations. Did you ever meet someone who was a “pain in the neck?” Each of us is susceptible to our body’s unconscious response to people and circumstances. These perceptions can show up as episodes of neck pain.

If the weakest link in our bodies is our neck, stress shows up there. While chiropractic care cannot reduce the stress of your busy life, it can help improve your ability to handle and tolerate it. More importantly, it can do this without the dangers and complications of drugs or surgery!

Remember to tell your friends, family members or co-workers who suffer from headaches or migraines that they will receive a 50% OFF CHECKUP in our office!

Paracetamol, the drug commonly found in headache tablets, has surpassed hepatitis and alcohol to become the most common cause of liver failure in Australia.

Doctors are being urged to exercise caution when prescribing paracetamol following cases of patients suffering accidental poisoning after taking only the recommended dose of the painkiller, often sold under the brand Panadol.

A report published in The Medical Journal Of Australia found that people who didn’t eat enough, drank a lot of alcohol or took certain medications were vulnerable to toxic effects from paracetamol. Elderly people with kidney or heart and lung problems may also be at increased risk.

“Accidental paracetamol poisoning should be suspected in any patient with acute liver failure,” the report said.

“Clinicians should be cautious about prescribing regular doses of paracetamol for pain control in malnourished or fasting patients, and need to counsel patients who are regular users of the drug.”

Healthy people (that is, people who are drug-free) are usually able to metabolize paracetamol, most of which is excreted from the body in urine.

But, the drug can accumulate in people with risk factors and those who regularly take it, rendering even a normal dose toxic.

The Accidental Paracetamol Poisoning report, compiled by experts from Austin Health in Victoria, describes the case of a 45-year-old Australian woman who died from liver failure.

She was taking Paracetamol for abdominal pain after having a hysterectomy and suffering complications. Her eating had been poor because of pain, vomiting and treatment.

“The patient… was noted to be displaying odd behavior,” the record states.

“The following morning, she became increasingly confused and drowsy. She was admitted to the intensive care unit, where her conscious state deteriorated rapidly and she required intubation.”
The woman was transferred to a liver transplant unit but died before a donor organ became available. A post mortem examination found a toxic level of paracetamol in her body.

Parents are warned not to give children painkillers unless they are in severe pain than cannot be managed any other way (like an adjustment, ice therapy or rest?)

Dr. David Thomas, pediatric spokesman for the Australian Medical Association, said, “Paracetamol and Ibuprofen (Nurofen) are drugs – they aren’t without risks or side effects.”

(WOW, now that’s a statement. Fast, effective and safe has been the general consensus within the medical profession regarding these two particular drugs for years. How many people have needlessly suffered as a result of this blatantly wrong assumption?)

NOTE TO READERS: ALL DRUGS HAVE SIDE EFFECTS AND, THEREFORE, ALL DRUGS POSE SOME RISK EVEN WHEN TAKEN IN ‘SAFE’ DOSES.

STRIVE TO LIVE A DRUG-FREE LIFE – THERE’S NO RISK IN THAT AT ALL!

Remember, this month’s Health Problem of the Month is Headaches and Migraines. This month, all of your friends, co-workers and family members who are battling with headaches or migraines are entitled to receive 50% off their initial consultation.

Research Proves Chiropractic Relieves Migraines!

A recently published Australian study adds to the growing body of research indicating that chiropractic care is effective for migraine headaches. The analysis followed 123 individuals, aged 10 to 70 years, with clinically diagnosed migraines. Eighty-three subjects completed headache diaries over two months of chiropractic care and two months of post-treatment data collection. A control group of 40 subjects was also established.

On average, experimental participants enjoyed significant declines in migraine frequency, duration, disability and medication use, compared with controls. According to the article, around a third of the group reported “more than 90% reduction of migraines as a consequence of the two months of chiropractic care. About 50% of the remaining participants reported significant improvement in the severity of each episode.”

By way of commentary, Doctors of Chiropractic believe the body has an inherent ability to heal itself and that the structure of the spine relates to the function of the human body. Rather than simply relieving symptoms, chiropractors help patients prevent illness by achieving optimal health. That’s why regular chiropractic checkups are important, even if you’re not in pain. And since chiropractors don’t use drugs or surgery, there’s no need to worry about harmful drug interactions of side effects of medication.

Headaches: Not All in Your Head

About 20% of the population suffers from the pain of chronic headaches. These same people spend over 5 billion dollars on “over the counter” medications each year. And, while these drugs may cover up the symptoms, they do not treat the cause of the headaches.

Pain experienced during a headache is nature’s warning signal that something is wrong, like a fire alarm signaling trouble. Pulling the batteries from the alarm does not address the cause. The same holds true for headaches. A thorough chiropractic evaluation can determine whether a subluxation, a misalignment of spinal bones, is causing pressure to the nervous system, producing the headache.

Chiropractors are the only health care professionals trained to analyze and correct spinal nerve interference. In our society today, spinal nerve stress caused by subluxation has literally reached epidemic proportions.

Recent Study Shows 90% Drop in Headaches!

In a recent study, the average frequency of headache attacks was reduced by 90% in a specific spinal care group. Medication use also dropped 94%. Other symptoms associated with migraine were reduced including nausea, vomiting, photophobia and phonophobia.

Chronic Headaches and Neck Pain: A Big Pain In The Neck

A study involving 180 female office workers, ages 25 to 53, with chronic neck pain and headaches proved that endurance training – consistent repetitive neck exercises, strength training – isometric neck exercises (traction with resistance) and specific spinal adjustments had significantly reduced pain and disability. Significant improvements in neck strength and range of motion were also noted.

Only See ‘Wellness Experts’ If You Want to Be Well.

By correcting and improving your posture and the function of your spine and nervous system, Doctors of Chiropractic help to enhance the health and wellbeing of your whole body. Your chiropractic care not only reduces symptom pain, but also helps you to be healthier for a lifetime. We also suggest other healthy lifestyle practices to help you live your life to the fullest.

In addition, our team will make life more convenient for your friend/family member/co-worker and super easy for them to make an appointment. We are willing to contact them directly, whether via a call, email, letter or fax to provide them with any further information they may need. And, if they are sick of putting up with their health problems and are ready to make an appointment, their spinal check-up will be 50% Off!! So, they really have nothing to lose, and only the possibility of great health to gain.

This Month’s Theme

Do you have friends, family members or co-workers who suffer from frequent headaches or migraines? Then tell them, “You’re not alone!” Headaches are one of the most common health issues facing people worldwide. The collective number of pills taken every day in an attempt to counteract the pain of headaches alone is simply staggering! And, when it comes to migraines, there are many migraine sufferers who are forced to deal with pain so severe that are left practically incapacitated. Thankfully, the vast majority of patients have found that their frequent bouts with headaches or migraines can be minimized or even eliminated through safe, natural chiropractic care!

A Gentle, Accurate and Efficient Checkup

A thorough examination can determine if the headache or head pain problems your friends or family members are experiencing are a result of misalignments in their spine. The tests performed during this examination are gentle, accurate and efficient. Our highly trained and experienced team will then provide your friend with a thorough report to explain what has been found in their child’s case. Again, this checkup is only 50% off our normal price. Help your friends make 2010 healthier and better than 2009. They really have nothing to lose!

How do you spell relief?

Do you spell it A-S-P-I-R-I-N, V-A-L-I-U-M, M-O-T-R-I-N, or T-Y-L-E-N-O-L? There are literally thousands of ways many people spell relief, but most boil down to D-R-U-G-S. People take a lot of drugs: billions of pills, powders, potions and lotions. Why shouldn’t we? We’re exposed to thousands of TV and radio commercials, newspaper and magazine advertisements, soap operas and prime time shows all saying the same thing: “Just take a little pill; everything will be alright.” Is relief important? Of course it is. If you’re in pain or suffering, that’s all you can think of: “Let me get rid of this headache,” “If only the pain would go away,” “I wish I could find a position that’s comfortable,” “if only the fever would break,” or “if only I could breathe freely.” There are times when medication is necessary and desirable. The accident victim, the burn victim, the terminally ill and others should receive the relief they need. We want ease, not diseas. Medicines are sometimes seen as little gems to those who know only agony and distress without them.

But what of Grandma?

But what of the grandma who gulps down a dozen aspirin tablets a day for her arthritis? What of the person taking drugs for “everyday” headaches? What of those who take blood pressure or cholesterol medication for years? What of the woman who runs to the medicine cabinet every month for menstrual discomfort? What of the person who regularly swallows Prozac, Valium or alcohol to get through the day? The amount of drug use in society is staggering and has been increasing for decades. As early as 1974, the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain revealed that every 24 to 36 hours, somewhere from 50% to 80% of adults in the United States and the United Kingdom swallow a medically-prescribed drug. All this drug taking might spell relief, but does it spell health? Do drugs correct the cause of your problem or do they just temporarily relieve and suppress symptoms? Drugs don’t get to the cause; as soon as their effects wear off, the symptoms return and it’s back to the medicine cabinet.

Do drugs make you healthy?

If drugs made people healthy, then those that take the most of them should be the healthiest on the planet! But aren’t they the sickest? In part, that’s because drugs cause health problems. According to one study, 106,000 people (on average) die each year in the U.S. from properly prescribed medications in hospitals. Another 2.2 million are seriously harmed and require additional hospitalization due to adverse drug reactions (ADR). Since hospital drug use accounts for just half of all prescription drug use, the numbers for the entire U.S. population are at least double: 212,000 deaths and 4.4 million hospitalizations per year. Malpractice and medication mistakes cause an additional 180,000 deaths per year and hospital infections kill 103,000 people per year. That’s a total of 495,000 deaths each year! Is it any wonder that modern medicine is the third leading cause of death in the U.S. and quite possibly kills as many people as the second cause of death – cancer?

Drugs Lie

Drugs lie to you. They make you think you are healthy when you are feeling no pain. The bodily malfunction, however, still exists. Drug use often takes your attention away from correcting the physical, emotional and spiritual causes of your illness or condition. Symptoms are often warning signals telling you that something is wrong with your body, mind or spirit. While you take medicines to feel better, your physical and emotional health may continue to deteriorate. More importantly, it has long been recognized that suppressing symptoms or acute disease may in fact cause chronic disease.

“The greatest part of all chronic disease is created through the suppression of acute disease by means of drug poisons and through the destructive effects of the drugs themselves.” – Sir William Osler “Cancer, tuberculosis…and all chronic diseases were once innocent colds.” – J.H.Tilden, M.D.

“Diseases are crises of purification, of toxic elimination. Symptoms are the natural defenses of the body. We call them diseases, but in fact they are the cure of diseases.” – Hippocrates

The world’s greatest drug store

Your body manufactures antibiotics, insulin, painkillers, blood pressure and heart drugs, hormones, chemicals and hundreds of other drugs (many still undiscovered) to regulate your brain chemistry and mood, digestion, elimination, growth and blood chemistry. The greatest drug store in the world is your own marvelous body, as long as your body is functioning properly – that’s where chiropractic care helps. Chiropractors help you keep your body/mind functioning properly by locating and correcting a very common condition that causes dis-ease or body/mind malfunction. That condition is called a vertebral subluxation.

Correcting Subluxations

Chiropractors correct your subluxations with a special procedure called a chiropractic adjustment, which releases subluxations from your system. The removal of this severe stress permits your body to function better. When your doctor of chiropractic corrects your vertebral subluxations, your natural, internal “drug store,” your inner healer, is activated. Correcting vertebral subluxations turns on your body’s natural internal drug store without side effects, adverse drug reactions or “external” dependency. If you know someone living on medication, please tell them there may be a better way; tell them about chiropractic. They’ll thank you.
